So besides from including all those expected introductions such as the new ships, the SC nerf, the Destroyer buff, there were also a few hidden gems. Including the Dramiel nerf, the destroyer buff, the t3 BC nerf, and the new modules.
Firstly under the monumental changes in the ship section, largely unannounced is the sizeable nerf to the Dramiel. Or for those of you who can’t be bothered to hit the link The Dramiel has had several changes which are.
o Mass increase from 740,700 kg to 950,000 kg.
o Max velocity reduced from 473 m/sec to 460 m/s
o Scan resolution reduced from 990 mm to 750 mm.
o CPU reduced from 145 tf to 133 tf.
o Powergrid reduced from 38 MW to 37 MW.
Ouch. Even though i’m not a dram pilot myself i’ve flown in frigate warfare a fair bit and even though on the surface the fitting nerfs look marginal, it has at a stroke rendered the already tight fits for drams that involve dual props impossible. in fact nearly all existing dram fits are now obsolete. More importantly is the big nerf to speed, and the larger one to mass, and a still hefty one to scan resolution.
The days of the uncatchable, super fast Drams appear to be over, with the combination of straight speed and agility nerfs and fitting nerfs. this conciding with the rise of it’s buffed brother the Daredevil might see a bit more variety on which shiny faction frigate you bust the big bucks out on. honestly i welcome the change. the Dramiel was dangerously close to being so OP it rendered all other frigates obsolete if price and skills were no object. with this change, it will bring the field bak into contension.
then there’s the general buffs to both hybrids and hybrid ships. even though 10 and 5 Ms looks small on paper, and for some of the smaller ships they are, we are forgetting that this is BASE speed, that is before dicking around with skills and props. especially on the larger ships which are seeing an almost 10% base speed increase, or even more (the Domi and the Meagthron are both seeing 10ms buffs) might bring others into the field of “fast bships” with the phoon. Once again i think this is a good thing, as a class as diverse as the Battleships should have more than one battleship capable of doing acceptable MWD speeds (the phoon & maybe the pest).
Of course everyone has seen the nerfs to the T3 BCs. We all new it was coming, they couldn’t release some of the ships in that state, the nado in particular. Even so i’m somewhat disappointed by the fact that with the exception of the nado- which was the only really broken one, all of them have annoyingly generic and generally unexciting bonuses. the nado by comparison retains it’s game changing falloff buff (abliet halved).
the Torp idea seems to have been removed from the Naga entirely, which is another disapointing development. Instead of a much needed development to the concept of a torp boat, which until the naga in it’s first form came along was VERY undeveloped, falling to the phoon (which only had 5 torp slots) or the raven (which wasn’t fast enough). Instead the Naga has confined itself to being a “mini-rokh”, with largely the same role, slightly faster, better DPS but no tank. Go figure.
Meanwhile the Talos sees some real potential to be a mini-mega with it’s stasis web bonus dropped in favour of tracking bonuses. while this certainly adds some much needed verastility to the ship, giving it a potentially hilarious anti-cruiser/frigate swatting role with rails and prop (provided that it can fit them of course), taking advantage of the same effective tracking at long range like the blaster-rokh does with 40km+ blasters.
On another note the Oracle has been well an truly stripped of any excitement value. Everyone knew there was going to be something truly f’d up with it’s capacitor being a battlecruiser hull with large lazors, but CPP’s knee jerk reaction has been to give it fairly generic bonueses to damage and capacitor use reduction. while the loss of it’s optimal range bonuses has me irked, i guess it was necessary.
Finally the Nado retains it’s title of being the prime new BC, with it’s falloff bonus that really gives it the edge in ranged warfare with ACs. all the others, with suprisingly the Talos rather than the other two being the closest competitor in my mind.
there’s also a whole lot of new T2 modules for all those mods, well that were either really utilities or capital specific mods. besides the remote hull reps, there’s also t2 tractor beams now (i haven’t checked their skill requirements but it’s bound to be interesting) and a few other things like bomb launchers and perhaps most noticeably new warfare links and triage/siege mods.
I won’t touch much on the supercap stuff, because there’s a whole bunch of nullsec warrior bloggers busily going on about it, but suffice to say that i think it’s slightly, well UP. despite the hit to EHP, the basic premise of the SC remains the same. and the Supa Carrier’s amazing damage output remains by and large uneffected. it’s certainly not a large enough change for the dispossessed nullsec alliances with virtually no SCs to beat the DRF with hundreds. Don’t expect anything too radical from nullsec, at least not immediately.
The much needed Caldari reskins are meh in my opinion, with most of it just being some unobtrusive skin work. the Raven got a brand new model, which is pretty much the same. Faction logos- and corp logos on the ships now too- that’s a nice touch. Ultimately though since they didn’t even touch the F**ken Moa, it’s not enough. More information over at freebooted
On a last note destroyers are getting a massive buff. like a seriously massive buff. I wrote about Destroyers and their weaknesses at length in one of my old Podlogs posts, but since that appears to have dropped off the face of the earth i’ll have to recap. Destroyers suffered huge problems from slot layout, to restrictive PG and CPU, to simply having shit all tank and not enough DPS or alpha to make up for it. With the exception of the Thrasher, the destroyer class was by and large shit. No longer.
- The rate of fire penalty has been removed from all destroyers.
- For all destroyers the shield and armor have been increased by 10%, capacitor capacity has been increased by 25% and signature radius decreased by 25%.
Ahem. that’s substantial now isn’t. sure it’s still going to be the Thrasher that get’s the largest windfall from this, since the horrendous slot layout and fitting hasn’t been fixed on the other ships, but maybe the combination of the hybrid and gallente ship buffs with the destroyer buff might actually make the catalyst useful. mind you good luck fitting a full tackle on that 2 mid slots… as for the corcer… yeah.
Overally i don’t care about the other ships, because i’m a thrasher pilot myself. can’t wait to pwn people with my new and improved thrasher. that’s all i need. Ultimately while the T3 BCs might not perform up to the hype, the substantial buffs to the destroyer will change the face of frigate warfare.
Winter is here (or the aussie summer holidays in my case). I don’t know about null, but i can’t wait to get my hands on Tornado, and fly the new and improved thrasher.
