if the Naga was on my mind for all the right reasons, than the Talos was on my mind for all the wrong ones.
For a start i’d like to say that this ship just looks friggin Epic.
However the problem was that CPP put in no uncertain terms exactly what this ship is about, and if anything that really shoehorned the ship- compared to the Naga which can fill so many different roles in PvP CPP gave the Talos… well one.
“IN YOUR FACE GLASS CANNON”
while light tank battleships appear to be the theme of the new ships, the Talos might just be a bridge too far.
the problem here is the Talos is a blaster boat with large weapons and web bonuses. this means that unless the Talos is 10 km away it’s wasting it’s potential. I have absolutley no problem with INYOURFACE blaster glass cannons. the problem is that they don’t always work, they are highly situational, and they are limited to what they can fight.
Compared to the Naga which appears to be set to be busting the knee caps of battleships on so many different levels with sniping and torping, the Talos looks like it’s just going to be an Oversized Thorax- the bully who finds the enemy cruisers and blasts them into oblivion- the same way the thorax and it’s variants do to frigates. because without a tank it seriously can not brawl with anything that can land reasonable DPS back
this is because if a Talos ever attempted to take down a battleship which isn’t a sniper or PVE/fleet configured, the exchange would happen like this-
“HAHAHAHHA Now i have you within web range.”
“Cool story bro”
“FIRE LE BLASTERS”
*Tempest fires autocannons*
= one dead Talos.
While it’s value against sniper battleships or silly PVE things is strong, forget any serious PVP battleships- they will eat the Talos alive.
That said, the webbing bonus is formidable, and i’d seriously hate to be smaller than it and on the receiving end…. scan res problems aside, the prospect of being caught by this thing as a frigate is downright frightening
However as a battleship pilot the Talos does not scare me. As a shield nano kiting BC pilot it does not scare me. Even as a shield nano kiting cruier or HAC this does strike me as particularly formidable. simply because if you are faster than this you can avoid this, and if you can go 10km+ than you can’t get killed by it.
QED the Talos can only catch the one thing in the conventional ship class that can smack it down, while eveyrhting else with a MWD and decent skills can simply kite it… and kite it… and kite it.
this limits the Talos’s target selection to other ships in it’s category, close range armor buffer brawlers.
I honestly hope that this doesn’t turn out to be the case, as i think that it is an excelent ship to look over, and i hope that it gets some true versatility (and therefore viability). one trick ships are fun… but limited.
